Mayumi Hagiwara
I am an assistant professor in the Extensive Support Needs (moderate/severe disabilities) Program in the Department of Special Education. Before joining the faculty at SF State, I was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Kansas, where I finished my Ph.D., focusing on promoting self-determination and inclusive community participation for people with extensive support needs. I love sharing my expertise on inclusion, self-determination, and family-school partnerships with future teachers. I enjoy researching inclusive education, self-determination, family-school partnerships, transition planning, and inclusive adult outcomes for people with extensive support needs.
I started my undergraduate degree as an international student. Since none of my family members had American college experience to give me advice, and my English was not as proficient, it was difficult to navigate college life. But I felt supported by professors and fellow students in the special education department and enjoyed practicum and student teaching experiences, which provided me with fundamental knowledge and skills to become an effective teacher.
“People with disabilities are just like us (in other words, they are still human).” – Ryan Henley, my friend with autism
